Salary: Grade G6 from: £34,145 to £38,638 inclusive of London Weighting with potential progress to £40,757 per annum inclusive of London Weighting through sustained exceptional contribution. 

Hours: Full-time

Contract Type: Fixed term (14 months, with a possibility to extend beyond the 14 months).

We are looking to recruit a full-time Senior Technician (Environmental Biology) to support the University’s Environmental Sciences’ biology facilities. To view the facilities please visit: Centre for Pollution Research and Policy | Brunel University of London

The post holder will oversee our biology research laboratories, training and supervising our undergraduate and postgraduate students working within these laboratories. The post holder must be knowledgeable regarding Health and Safety, ensuring all those working within the laboratories follow safe working practices. They will also be expected to adopt a hands-on approach to ensure equipment and facilities are maintained and operated to a high standard.

The post holder will manage a varied and extensive workload, expected to support grant funded research work and contract work, where attention to detail is essential. They may also be required to support other work areas, e.g. practical classes, chemistry laboratories, fieldwork. 

To be successful in this senior role, applicants should have good prior work experience in a laboratory, and be skilled at some of the following techniques:

  • cell-culture
  • in-vitro assays
  • ELISAs
  • (eco)toxicology testing
  • molecular biology
  • western blotting
  • histology

Whilst the position is predominantly laboratory base, experience of environmental biology fieldwork would also be desirable.

GCSE Maths & English grade C or equivalent is an essential criterion.

They will work within a small team led by the Principal Technical Manager (Environmental Sciences), which forms part of the wider Technical Services Team.

They will be strong communicators, able to engage effectively with a range of people. Successful applicants will also demonstrate high levels of customer service to ensure an excellent student and staff experience. Willing to work outside normal working hours on limited occasions.
